Get in, feel good, get going: The cab brings together the result of decade-long vehicle design and construction. It offers a comfortable sitting position in the low-vibration area behind the front axle – a valuable support especially when off-roading. All the settings can be registered quickly in the large instrument cluster. This make a considerable contribution to safety and user-friendliness. This way, work and comfort go hand in hand in the Unimog. Because the faster and more intuitively the driver can operate the many different driving and working functions, the safer and more reliable off-road use will be.

Ergonomic progress.

The cab of this cab-behind-engine truck supports the driver most clearly when the job in hand leaves no room for lengthy deliberation: Ergonomically and intuitively arranged, all elements make operation more convenient. The seating position in the low-vibration area behind the front axle enables more comfortable off-road travel and offers a very good overview of the area of to be traversed. Whereas the single cab can accommodate two full-size single seats and a centre seat, the crewcab available ex-works can carry up to seven people to the place of work. An additional rear seat with four seats, otherwise two individual seats are possible. The rear seat also offers additional stowage space, e.g. for tools or material.

Seven comfortable places.

If the Unimog is not only to transport as much material as possible to places of work, but also teams of up to 7 persons, the crewcab is a valuable asset. It has an additional four-seater rear bench seat – each seat equipped with its own seat belt and with optimum comfort features. Alternatively, for air-sprung single seats are optionally available. The crewcab makes it easy to get to work sites in full team strength, even in extreme terrain. In addition to sufficient head- and legroom, there is also plenty of stowage space under the fold-down rear bench seat. Tools, equipment and personal belongings can be safely stowed in them and are always at hand. The front-door compartments feature further stowage options. A total of four wide-opening doors – two on each side of the vehicle – also provide ergonomic access to, and exit from, the rear passenger compartment.

The interior offers a high level of comfort and makes work easier. The heating and air conditioning system creates a well-tempered working atmosphere in all weathers. The standard high roof and the adapted engine tunnel allow space for two full single seats and the optional centre seat. The modern workplace also includes a CD radio with Bluetooth hands-free feature. The centre stowage and the standard glove compartment look tidy and allow a clear overview and orderliness.

  • The cab is clearly organised and creates a pleasant working atmosphere. The multifunction steering wheel lies perfectly in your hand and provides quick access to the hands-free system and the display of the instrument cluster.
  • The instrument cluster shows all the important information such as oil level, air pressure or hydraulic system settings on its large and bright display.
  • Functions such as gearshift, premium engine brake and Electronic Quick Reverse are integrated in the steering column stalks.

Its robustness, reliability and versatility have made the “universal power tool”, as it was originally called, the work and transport vehicle of choice worldwide for decades when difficult operating conditions require a reliable helper. Despite its broad scope of practical skills, it has been possible to keep its dimensions compact – and it’s for this specific reason that the highly off-road-capable Unimog can make use of its effectiveness virtually wherever it is needed.

Chassis.

More than 70 years of development experience.

The engageable all-wheel drive system brings the vehicle steadily forward even on difficult terrain. To prevent any wheel from spinning, differential locks can be engaged. The single-tyre principle is also well thought-out: The rear wheels follow in the tracks made by the front wheels and are thus able to use the firmness of the surface already compacted by them.

The engine has been positioned in a central position under the cab. This results in a balanced axle load distribution, which has a positive effect on vehicle handling. And when the Unimog does have to stop, it does so with the pneumatic braking system with off-road ABS, automatic load-dependent brake force control (ALB) and disc brakes on all four wheels.

Knows virtually no limits.

The highly off-road-capable Unimog is the embodiment of more than 70 years of development experience: Portal axles, all-wheel drive, central tyre inflation system and differential locks on both axles and an extremely torsionally-capable vehicle frame enable the U 4023 and the U 5023 to advance in even the most arduous terrain. For instance thanks to Tirecontrol plus: The preset modes “road”, “sand” and “bad road” make the selection of the correct tyre pressure at the touch of a button and easy and automatic.

Unique frame concept.

At the core of the Unimog U 4023 and Unimog U 5023’s all-terrain capabilities is the cranked vehicle frame with welded-in tubular cross members. Thanks to its torsional flexibility in combination with torque tube technology and the 3-point mounting of engine, transmission, cab and body, a diagonal torsion of up to 600 mm is possible. As the frame is completely welded, it possesses great torsional resistance. At the same time the cranked frame makes possible both a low centre of gravity and high ground clearance. The typical Unimog portal axles also ensure this. And the asymmetrical arrangement of the axle differentials makes it easier to override obstacles.

Short frame overhangs at the front and rear result in large approach/departure and ramp breakover angles, so that hardly any steep terrain presents a difficulty for the Unimog. Add to this the following: Water-protected units, the raised air intake tube and ventilation ducts make fording of bodies of water with a depth of up to 800 mm (optionally 1200 mm) possible.

The cranked frame with welded-in tubular cross members is the heart of the vehicle’s torsional capability.

By connecting the axles to the transmission by means of torque tube and thrust ball, an axle articulation of up to 30° is possible. And encapsulation protects the drive shaft against contamination with dust, water and other outside influences when driving off the beaten track.

Torque tube technology and helicoidal springs enable extreme spring travel and a great axle articulation of up to 30 degrees.

The economical engine.

The highly off-road-capable Unimog is equipped with modern and efficient Mercedes-Benz drive system technology. Tested in large-scale series production, the Euro 6 engine generation sets standards for its class and takes no half-measures where conserving the environment, economic efficiency and top performance are concerned. The 4-cylinder engine with an output of 170 kW is particularly maintenance-friendly, economical, smooth-running and powerful. It is characterised by its high torque of up to 900 Nm as well as good figures for exhaust emissions, consumption and power-to-weight ratio. 4-valve technology and common rail injection up to 2400 bar further increase efficiency.

However, the engine is not only used for propulsion but also for braking: The two-stage decompression engine brake reduces mechanical wear and tear and makes a great contribution to economic efficiency. The exhaust gas aftertreatment system uses BlueTec 6 technology which has already proven its worth in daily use over many millions of kilometres in our heavy-duty mass-production engines. In the exhaust gas aftertreatment unit, the SCR catalytic converter reduces the nitrogen oxides to a minimum. And the diesel particulate filter prevents almost any soot particles from escaping.

Transmissions.

Top performing technology with power as standard.

Powerful transmission.

In the Unimog, the fully synchronised electro-pneumatic transmission (EPS) with its eight forward and six reverse gears provides the tractive power. A special off-road group is also available with an additional eight forward and eight reverse gears each for low driving speeds. It is characterised by particularly smooth running, a long service life and great efficiency. And with the synchronised Electronic Quick Reverse group, quick changes in the direction of travel are possible, e.g. for rocking free on rough terrain.

The Unimog ensures for itself the full range of possible applications not least through its well-proven transmission power take-offs – for example a fast one for hydraulic pumps and a very fast one for fire brigade pumps. Thanks to an optimised floor assembly, the transmission power take-offs are excellently accessible and are highly versatile.

With the rear-axle drive system for the road and the pneumatically engageable all-wheel drive for off-road use, you have maximum traction in every situation. And when the going gets really tough, differential locks on both axles ensure full power transmission. This way you can be sure to be able to move forward even if only one wheel has sufficient traction. This enables the Unimog to tackle gradients of up to 100 %.

AutomaticShift.

Two drive programs help reduce the driver’s workload: in automatic mode “A” – whilst taking into account the load, accelerator position, engine operation, climbs/inclines and the engine brake – the drive program handles gear changes and clutch operation entirely. However, if it becomes necessary for the driver to manually change gear using the multifunction lever, this is also possible.

Complete control is offered by the “M” drive program (manual). Here, gear selection is also made using the multifunction lever. The driver determines the gear and clutch operation occurs automatically.

Versatile applicability is the trademark of the Unimog. Its reinforced portal axles with hub reduction gear guarantee high ground clearance for the most diverse of tasks – even off the beaten track.

To this end, the differential and the drive shafts connected with it are repositioned higher up. Axle tube and differential lie above the wheel centre. In this way, obstacles are easier to overcome and the vehicle’s centre of gravity remains low.

Its axle suspension is reinforced and can withstand the greatest loads. The axle design is also of great robustness: It makes great standard load capacities possible.

Tirecontrol plus.

Indispensable on off-road terrain.

No-one is yet to replicate the Unimog in this domain: setting the right tyre pressure for the task at hand is conveniently carried out at the push of a button on the display. The driver has the choice between the three pre-configured modes “Road”, “Sand”, “Rough” and “Manual”. The tyre pressure is then automatically adjusted. Thus, the Unimog can be driven with low tyre pressure on loose ground such as sand or mud and hence has a greater tyre contact area. That leads to better traction and less slipping. Or economical and safe driving on-road thanks to a high tyre pressure and smaller tyre contact area.

The standardised interfaces and drives for fixed or interchangeable devices, which are already available ex works, make it possible. The highly off-road capable Unimog has two different transmission power take-offs as well as an engine power take-off. A vehicle hydraulic system to power different implements and continuous consumers is available as optional equipment. Standardised sockets provide electric power. The body mounting space can be used particularly flexibly: The possibilities range from platform bodies and box bodies to special solutions for specific requirements. All this results in a strong and highly mobile workshop with which work assignments can be carried out safely and reliably.

The engine PTO of the highly off-road capable Unimog offers enormous operational potential. It delivers a torque of up to 600 Nm, for the operation e.g. of fire-fighting pumps or hydraulic motors.

Hydraulic interfaces.

The vehicle hydraulics system is used to operate equipment such as self-recovery winches or hydraulic working tools. The single-circuit hydraulics provides an operating pressure of 240 bar at a delivery volume of 60 l/min and 24 kW pump output. Standardised plug connections are located at the front and rear.

The optional dual-circuit municipal hydraulics make the Unimog even more versatile: Interchangeable attachments and add-on units can thus be operated simultaneously. In the cold season, the Unimog can be used for winter maintenance work with a snow plough and automatic spreader.

Electrical interfaces.

Four standardised sockets in the cab and outside enable the connection of electrical consumers such as control and operating systems for implements – without the need for any cabling.

Once there, it reliably delivers first-class work. The prerequisites for this are defined by the existing spaces for implement carriers, as well as interfaces and drives for fixed or interchangeable devices. Fire & rescue.

A very tough performer.

Forest fires in the Mediterranean, floods on the Danube and Elbe, violent hurricanes and autumn storms all over Europe, plus hail or earthquakes: The number of natural disasters is on the increase all around the world – and with them the major and special operations of fire brigades and disaster control organisations. This means that the emergency forces are facing ever greater challenges – and so are the emergency vehicles. No other vehicle offers a performance potential under the toughest conditions comparable to that of the Unimog: as a transport vehicle for a work team, material, tools and equipment. And on site as fire-fighting vehicle, clearing vehicle or recovery vehicle.

The Unimog meets this requirement, for example, with its cranked and welded vehicle frame, thrust tube technology for extreme diagonal twisting of up to 600 mm, large approach, departure and ramp breakover angles, portal axles, all-wheel drive and differential locks as well as high traction and climbing capability.

A special feature is the self-protection system. It sprinkles tyres and windscreen when the flames come too close to the vehicle. The heat protection package, which is already available ex works, includes, for example, the sheathing of important cables to protect them from heat and damage.

With its operational tactical preparations – for example the round roof hatch for firefighting directly from the cab – the Unimog effectively supports emergency forces. And the optional crewcab provides space for up to 7 firefighters.

The engine or transmission power take-off makes the Unimog the perfect vehicle for fast forest firefighting. The transmission with off-road group ensures that the vehicle can also be operated in difficult terrain or for “pump & roll” at extremely low driving speeds. The drive system is designed in such a manner as to enable fording of bodies of water with a depth of up to 80 cm (optionally 120 cm). These are further highlights: the Tirecontrol plus central tyre inflation system with “road”, “sand” and “bad road” modes and the powerful transmission with the Electronic Quick Reverse gearshift, the off-road reduction gear and the electronically automated EAS gear shift.

The highly-off-road-capable Unimog, too, is available with equipment for municipal services. This opens up new possibilities because, thanks to being equipped with powerful dual-circuit municipal hydraulics, both the Unimog U 4023 and the U 5023 are outstandingly well-suited, for example for use with an automatic spreader and snow plough – and are therefore predestined for municipal services yards in cities and villages at risk of flooding.

The Unimog with municipal equipment masters classic tasks in road maintenance and transport and easily tackles fording bodies of water up to 1.20 metres deep as well as driving on rugged, arduous terrain. This means technical help as well as rescue or recovery, for example in high water areas inaccessible to other vehicles.. Last but by no means least, the Tirecontrol plus central tyre inflation system and the high payload are of valuable service here.

Agriculture.

With all-wheel drive, robust drivetrain and extreme torsional flexibility, the highly off-road-capable Unimog always offers a clear advantage in rough terrain: for example when working in crop protection. The ex-works automatic tyre pressure regulation system provides excellent traction and has a particularly low impact on the ground. The off-road capability of the Unimog begins with its unique chassis concept: The torsionally flexible chassis with 3-point mounting of cab, engine and transmission as well as the axle suspension with thrust tube technology, wishbones and coil springs allow axle articulation of up to 30 degrees. All-wheel drive, single tyres, Tirecontrol plus central tyre inflation system and differential locks ensure maximum off-road traction. And the vehicle’s low centre of gravity ensures stability even on extremely steep slopes. When off-road, the Unimog also benefits in particular from its ground clearance of up to half a metre.
